Women arrested in Mexico in relation to ‘child-trafficking ring’

January 18, 2012

A group of Mexicans have been accused of being involved in a child-trafficking ring transporting youngsters from the country to Ireland for adoption.

Officials in the north American country have been probing an alleged gang and have detained six women.

Ten children were taken into custody at the same time the females were arrested.

Lino Gonzalez from the attorney general's office in Guadalajara city told AFP: "Three people were provisionally detained on Friday and three others were taken in on Monday.

"The presumption is that they gave the babies to Irish nationals."

Reports revealed that three suspects were found in a house along with nine babies, who could have been shipped to Ireland in the future.

A representative from the Irish embassy in Mexico said that people have been advised not to enter into private adoption deals.

Most coverage of people trafficking focuses on sexual exploitation and unpaid labour, according to Anti-Slavery, a charity raising awareness of the issue.
