Zetas leader captured in Mexico

December 14, 2011

One of the main members of one of Mexico's notorious drug cartels has been captured in the state of Veracruz, officials have reported.

Leader of the Los Zetas drug cartel, one of the most influential organisations in the drug war, Raul Lucio Hernandez Lechuga – also known as El Lucky – was arrested after security forces placed a 15 million peso (£700,000) bounty on his head.

Hernandez Lechuga was reportedly the man behind the activities of the Zetas cartel in the areas of Veracruz, Puebla and Oaxaca.

According to statistics, at least 40,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico in the past five years alone, with 50,000 troops and federal police constantly working to better the hostile environment.

The capture of the Zetas leader was announced by officials and President Felipe Calderon on social networking site Twitter.

According to npr.org, the Zetas cartel is the most violent drug gang in Mexico and was started by former military commandos and led by Heriberto "El Lazca" Lazcano Lazcano.
