Who is Claudia Spencer?

November 4, 2025

I am one of the collectives of people out there who doesn’t celebrate Halloween, nor do I like it!  So, Halloween came and went and soon we will see the end of 2025. Time waits for no man!

That said, working with children over a considerable number of years, I appreciate that many families do commemorate the season, and of course children always love to dress up as mystical characters, whether it be a fairy princess or a pumpkin. Indeed, it is good to encourage children to express themselves with fun, imaginative ideas, but so important not to frighten them.

I suggested that the children in my pre-school concentrate on the spider and its web this year, as they partake in Halloween. As a result, there has been much discussion about spiders and their habits.

I am aware of so many children – even adults actually – who are afraid of spiders, or at the very least don’t like them, and often quickly flatten them. Hum!

Sadly, I recall the story of an older gentleman who recently found a rather large spider in his bedroom. He couldn’t sleep until he had caught it and removed it. Well, they do run fast when they see you coming, and in the battle to catch it, the gentleman fell over and had a nasty injury.

Oh dear! What to do about spiders in the house. I certainly couldn’t sleep with one in my bedroom, could you?

On that note I recalled something I once wrote for my pre-school children about a spider, knowing they are an intrinsic part of family life.

I think if you listen to my attachment to this blog about Claudia Spencer you might indeed, begin to feel sorry for the next spider that you find in your house and not be in such a rush to reach for that broom or newspaper.

Perhaps we need to discover a little warmth, as we think of the point of view – taking the perspective of a spider – in this case Claudia Spencer, trying to survive the relentless cleaning habits of humans. I believe it’s relatable for children, especially since it helps them empathize with a tiny creature they might usually fear.
