UK children ‘have poorer literacy skills than European peers’

May 24, 2011

Schools in the UK might want to buy more key stage 2 books after experts said British schoolchildren have weaker literacy skills than those in other European countries.

According to the Campaign for Real Education, youngsters in Britain are lagging behind their counterparts in several important areas, such as English and maths.

Nick Seaton, secretary for the group, commented: "We need to buck our ideas up to get the standards of our youngsters on a par with competitor nations."

He expressed his backing for plans to make children continue studying maths and English until they achieve the required GCSE level.

Mr Seaton said this plan "makes sense" because it is vital they develop a good grasp of these subjects, regardless of what line of work they intend to go into.

He added that this approach should benefit the youngsters "in the long run".

The measure was announced by education secretary Michael Gove earlier this month.
