The Mexican Embassy

21 November 2012 01:00PM

So having done another quick London turnaround with memories of a most entertaining trip courtesy of East Coast Rail, I’m back in Yorkshire. The humour of the guard/ conductor (whatever they call themselves these days) on the journey south would have brought a smile to even the most miserable of faces and, he certainly had me, and my fellow passengers chuckling.  Most of his funny quirky comments are now well forgotten, undoubtedly because of the huge mass of information which has filtered through my head since then, but one closing comment which has stayed with me was when he said he was about to take a quick coffee break and make the most of the opportunity to have a few minutes reading his dressmakers weekly.  He didn’t look the type! Seemingly as we were 10 minutes ahead of schedule and had to wait for a slot to enter our platform, he was quite chuffed at the thought of the extra few moments of relaxation.

So after dropping my bags off at my London home from home, I was soon able to meander down Oxford Street. Not my favourite place in London I have to say but I enjoyed the fresh night air whilst I surveyed the Christmas lights. This year’s theme, – ‘Marmite. You love it or hate it.’

I resisted the urge to buy too many Christmas presents as I would only have to haul them back on the train the next day but I clocked which shop had the most appealing gifts then checked that they could be purchased on line. I did buy the most fabulous warm snuggly coat however which was an easy purchase as I wore it to travel home and it was noticeably colder when I arrived back in Yorkshire.

OK, I then had lots of useful and purposeful meetings followed by a light lunch with friends and then off to the Mexican Ambassador’s Residence. Sounds good Eh! Well I am privileged to have been invited and this is at least the 3rd time I have been there so I must be doing something right. A very interesting presentation by the British Ambassador to Mexico and the Mexican Ambassador to the UK, followed by a question and answer time and then canapés and margaritas. Whoop! Whoop!

A great evening to make new friends, get re acquainted with old ones. To make new business contacts, it proved to be an evening of networking, information and inspiration. I was well pleased.

I did wonder where my friendly guard was on the return journey to Yorkshire -at home probably reading his dressmakers weekly. In contrast I had an obnoxious man sitting opposite me who fell asleep and constantly snored.

That’s life. Now back in the office enjoying a great cup of Yorkshire tea.

Chat soon.
