Summer Vacation

August 8, 2013

Well I knew it was going to be hot, but I never expected the chocolate chips in the muffin to have melted before my little granddaughter had time to eat it. Now there’s a first! That said, Day 1 on the beach and it was cloudy. Thankfully that did dilute those heat rays and although it’s a myth that you can’t get burnt when its cloudy, and yes you most certainly can, It turned out to be less intense and actually a perfect first day, allowing our skin to acclimatise somewhat. I never did understand, nor will I comprehend why people want to lie in the sun for hours to change colour, only to cover it all up again – weather depending on their return to the UK. That’s of course if they are lucky enough to go a fabulous golden brown, which if I stayed here for a year I still never would!

As for my granddaughter, she’s already the colour they’re all striving to be. I loved the amusing comments from the beautiful little girl with the, oh so fabulous brown skin. (Not that I’m biased but, always thought she should be modelling, or on one of those TV ads with children) Well she had a few smiles when she proclaimed at the beach bar, “nanny, do you think I will get a sun-tan?” Awh, love her!

Some of the best comments I’ve had so far have been.

  • “When you go to the toilet on the plane, where does it go nanny?”
  • “ Nanny, I know what these are for. If I can’t breathe when we are landing you put it on my face.”
  • “Do you think we will get to use the slide?”
  • “Are we nearly in Spain?” (10 mins into the flight)

And I think the best one of all,

  • “Oh nanny, look! I think we’re landing in the sea.”

Now, she’s actually a very intelligent little girl but through the mouths of babes, aye! It brings to mind several years ago when I was driving to Malaga airport and my friend asked, “are we near the airport.”

“Well I sure hope so ‘cos if not that plane sure is in trouble,” I replied. So we adults come out with plenty of those stupid comments without engaging brain too. I suppose that’s the beauty of holidays. Were supposed to relax and not think aren’t we?

Well observations on the first day are just that, plenty of adults relaxing and not thinking!

I say that with negative tones. Am I just an overprotective nanny or have I always been like that? But unlike the young parents who suddenly forget they have children and either bury their heads, in probably the only book they read all year. Yes that infamous, ‘holiday novel.’Or, put on tons of sun-cream and then lay there motionless until they decide to turn over and try to burn another side. Wonder why they get a tinge of sun-stroke? Meanwhile, I can’t rest nor manage to get beyond one chapter in my book for keeping my 7 year old in constant shot. So I’m trundling into the water to bring her back, when she attempts to go too far out. Back again when she decides to play on the rocks – an accident waiting to happen! And then, talking to strangers, that always makes me nervous. They may or may not be all right but whatever they will soon know my life history.

It’s good that she is making friends; kids do that on the beach, don’t they? But suddenly I’m supervising half a dozen, now what’s that all about?

So, as I’m here for 10 days, by the end of the holiday I will either need a holiday, or feel completely invigorated and youthful. Let’s see.

Have a nice day, chat soon.
