Sinaloa leader’s aide shot dead in raid

January 24, 2012

The aide to one of Mexico's most wanted drug lords has been shot.

Luis Alberto Cabrera Sarabia, who also went by the name of 'The Architect', was killed on Friday (January 20th) after a shootout broke out on a ranch in the mountainous region of Canatlan in Durango state.

Army spokesman General Ricardo Trevilla told a news conference that Sarabia was one of the main men connected to Joaquin Guzman Loera, also known as 'El Chapo', who led the Sinaloa drug cartel after his brother, Felipe Cabrera Sarabia or 'The Engineer', was arrested in December 2011.

During the land and air raids to catch the alleged criminal, another gunman died and 11 others were detained on suspicion of being involved in illicit actions.

Reports also showed that three soldiers were left wounded, General Trevilla explained.

The northern states of Durango, Sinaloa and Chihuahua are key areas for the production of Mexican opium and marijuana.

Guzman Loera has been named one of the most wanted men in the US by officials after he escaped prison in a laundry basket in 2001.
