Sinaloa cartel boss deemed ‘world’s most wanted man’

January 11, 2012

A Mexican drug lord deemed 'the world's most wanted man' is at the focus of US efforts to tackle the war on drugs and violence in the country.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who was jailed in 1993 for his involvement in the Sinaloa cartel, escaped his cell in a laundry basket eight years into his sentence and has yet to be found.

The US has offered a reward of up to $5 million (£3.2 million) for his capture or for information leading to his arrest.

Government officials in Mexico have also ramped up the search for Guzman, who is reportedly in his 50s, as well as trying to locate the source of power for the highly-elusive and influential cartel.

The Sinaloa cartel controls a large amount of the trafficking of cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines into the US. It is also believed to have links with drug rings in around 50 other countries across the world.

Sinaloa's leader is on the Forbes list of the world's richest people.
