Reading during summer holidays ‘gets children eager to learn’
Parents might want to encourage their children to read plenty of books during their summer holiday, as it could help them further down the line.
According to Councillor Chris Metcalfe of North Yorkshire County Council, youngsters who read throughout their time off will be "eager to learn" when they get back to school.
In addition, he noted that the continued development of their reading capabilities during the break will help them to maintain the levels they have reached thus far.
North Yorkshire County Council is currently encouraging youngsters to find out what their local library has to offer this summer in a scheme called the Summer Reading Challenge.
Children will be able to collect a series of rewards as they work their way up to completing six books during the school holiday.
Councillor Metcalfe described this as a "wonderful way of promoting the joy of reading and introducing the library as a place of fun and excitement".
This comes after the Evening Standard launched a campaign to help boost literacy standards in London.
