Poor routine at home ‘affects schooling ability’

January 10, 2012

Children who do not have a sustainable routine when at home are less likely to do well in school.

This is according to new research from the Prince's Trust, which revealed that one in ten youngsters has days that lack structure and direction.

Furthermore, the study found that children who had the lowest grades in school were twice as likely to claim they had a poor routine at home – accounting for 26 per cent of 2,136 youngsters questioned.

Life coach and author of Toddlers: An Instruction Manual Joanne Mallon said that a set routine is important for the development of a child and that parents should ensure that they enforce bedtimes and meal times every day.

"Regular meal and snack times can be one of the signposts of your child's day. It helps to give them a sense of security when they know what's coming next," the expert added.
