Police discover illegal migrants leaving Mexico

May 19, 2011

Police have intercepted over 500 illegal migrants being transported to the US from Mexico.

A spokesman revealed that the people who were being smuggled had been forced to endure "inhumane conditions" during their journey.

Speaking to AFP, he described this as the "largest ever such operation to rescue illegal migrants" travelling in this way.

One of the migrants, who was found in Chiapas state, said the 513 people had been "suffering" in "very hot conditions".

"We were clinging to the ropes," he continued.

The people originated from places including El Salvador, Ecuador, India, the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nepal.

Juan Jose Gonzales, head of Southern Border Movement, was meanwhile quoted by the Guardian as saying that a growing number of human trafficking cases have been uncovered in the south of Mexico over the last few months.

This comes after the Associated Press reported the findings of a US-Mexico Chamber of Commerce study, which showed many American companies have been put off investing in Mexico because of ongoing violence among drug cartels.
