Police chief arrested for aiding suspected drug cartel leader

May 20, 2011

A police chief in Mexico has been arrested after claims of him aiding a drug cartel leader emerged.

Commander Juan Bosco, a police chief in the Cuernavaca area, was allegedly handed thousands of dollars for warning criminals about movements and operations by the police and the military.

The claims came from Victor Valdez, a drug boss who is now in custody and accused Bosco of "protecting" his organisation, Reuters reports.

Speaking to the media at the time of his arrest, he commented: "He used to alert us to army and federal crackdowns."

This latest development coincides with claims from a former CIA officer that the drug war in northern Mexico is "devolving into chaos".

Speaking to Newsmax, Lisa Ruth said violence in the region is "escalating" and gradually moving closer towards the border with the US.

She suggested that authorities have "abandoned" the area, as they have been unable to impose any kind of order.
