Police arrest man with links to Mexico’s most wanted

December 29, 2011

A man linked to one of Mexico's most wanted criminals has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.

The federal police in the country captured Luis Rodriguez Olivera, known as "El Guero" yesterday (December 28th) after a reward of up to $5 million (£3.2 million) was offered by US officials. He was caught in Mexico City Airport attempting to flee the country.

Olivera was suspected to be linked to the Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, who is widely wanted for his involvement in violence and trafficking.

The Mexican police released a statement that said Olivera and his brothers were responsible for the smuggling of cocaine into the US between 1996 and 2008.

Although Olivera had strong links with the Sinaloa cartel, he also forged a strong bond with Los Zetas after he left Guzman's gang in 2005.

According to public radio service NPR, the Sinaloa cartel was taken over by Guzman in 1989 and he now appears on the Forbes Rich List.
