Parents urged to help develop child’s reading skills

May 31, 2011

Parents have been encouraged to support schools' efforts to develop good literacy skills in youngsters.

According to Swansea Council, children can benefit considerably if their mother and father teach them basic nursery rhymes and songs before they start school.

Indeed, the authority said this can have a positive impact on their listening and speaking skills, which can aid future academic success.

"It's vital that children who are starting school can come to class full of stories to tell and be able to ask and answer questions," said Ian James, Swansea Council's head of education effectiveness.

He stated that grandparents and older siblings can also play a part in encouraging youngsters to read, listen and talk from an early age.

Mr James added that this could make a "big difference" to how well they will perform at school in subsequent years.

This comes after the Campaign for Real Education warned that British schoolchildren have weaker literacy skills than those in other European countries.
