Narco State

December 16, 2014

#NarcoState they are calling it.
With not much good news coming out of Mexico at the moment, and as the setting of many of my books is Mexico, I just had to blog about it, now didn’t I?

Mexico has a very special place in my heart and Sky News in particular is doing Mexico no favours at the moment, not to mention the tourism industry. That said, they are reporting truths and Mexico has always had its problems. Even I’m beginning to wonder now if I want to return to my beloved country. Did I really say that? It’s just so un-nerving. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time and all that stuff!
Now as a guerra in Mexico I have always had to have my wits about me but, we’re not talking about general common sense and safety we are talking about something far more serious. Organised crime and corruption on a grand scale, involving police, military and cartels.
It’s true that most of the people that I have met in Mexico including beloved Mexican friends know of, or have someone near to them that has ‘disappeared‘ – been kidnapped or worse. Oh my gosh what can one say. Is the situation getting worse or are people just shouting louder now? With certainty the disappearance of the 43 Mexican students a couple of months ago – all supposed murdered – has brought things to a head. No more the people are saying, something has to be done. S-o-o Mr President, I wouldn’t like to be in your shoes trying to tackle this one. And how many presidents before you have tried to tackle the corruption and failed?

So, with the forthcoming UKTI initiative between Mexico and the UK in 2015. The efforts to strengthen and encourage business growth between the two countries with Mexico’s diverse and expanding market, may well be effected by all this negative publicity. Then I suppose Mexico is used to negative publicity, because although to a lesser degree it has been going on for years.
So what can I say about this so-called Narco State?
Seriously as long as you are street wise, sensible and don’t go off the beaten track on your own, then visit Mexico.
A country with so much to offer, the wonders of its culture, food, music and friendliest of people, go and see for yourself.
Memories of time on the streets with one of the very helpful, non-corrupt, ‘touristy’ Police Officers!

As for me I will continue to write and undoubtedly be returning to do more research for future books. That said, the one that I am working on at the moment just so happens to be the story of a Mexican girl who is kidnapped, returned to her family safely upon payment of the ransom and, wait for it;- is sent to the UK to a fine Ladies College to be educated.
Fiction based on fact, this book really has taken me 5.500 miles round trip and returned to my very own doorstep – Yorkshire.
So on that note I will leave you.
Chat soon, and counting down to the end of the year. No, not Christmas, the end of the year.
Looking forward to 2015 and all that it has to offer.

Chat soon.
