‘Murphy method’ making a splash in child literacy

July 25, 2011

A teacher's one-on-one child literacy sessions are making huge headway with a significant number of pupils who have previously underperformed in class.

New Zealander Dianne Murphy uses 'direct instruction' and the approach of Professor John Hattie to reach youngsters and her methods have enjoyed a great deal of success at the Greig City Academy in London, reported the Daily Telegraph.

Teenagers who previously had reading ages of junior school students have managed to advance rapidly thanks to three half-hour sessions per week spent alone with Ms Murphy.

"The student of mine who came to these sessions returned with completely new levels of concentration and confidence, prepared all of a sudden to have a go when asked a question in class," social studies teacher Andrea Henry told the publication.

Direct instruction is a general term that refers to the teaching of a subject through lectures or demonstrations rather than inquiry-based learning.
