Mother of missing man ‘speaks out’

June 13, 2011

A woman whose son disappeared nearly 12 months ago is taking part in a major demonstration in Mexico.

Ofelia Castillo Mauricio is one of hundreds of people to join the 2,500 km march, which is a protest against the government's approach towards dealing with drug-related violence.

She told BBC News that she hopes the demonstration will help her find out what happened to her son, who was 35 when he vanished in July 2010.

"This is my first time speaking out, because I was scared," Ms Mauricio commented.

"If I knew where his body was, I would go look for him."

She revealed that her son, a municipal police officer in Calera, vanished from his place of work.

Ms Mauricio added that after he went missing, she became so depressed that she could not eat anything.

This comes after the Associated Press published research by the US-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, which found that ongoing violence among drug cartels in Mexico is putting many businesses in the US off investing in the country.
