Mexico welcomes mariachi bands from around the world

August 30, 2011

The annual International Mariachi and Charreria Conference got underway last weekend and saw more than 40 mariachi bands from across the globe parading through the streets of Guadalajara.

It was organised by the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce and involved mariachi representatives from a host of countries, including Sweden, the US, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico itself, Fox News reports.

Up to 15,000 spectators were on hand to see this year's parade, with 500 state and municipal police officers providing security.

Participants marched the 5km route on Sunday (August 28th) and the musicians were joined by a throng of 'Charros' or Mexican cowboys as they made their way to the conference venue in the heart of the city.

Meanwhile, viewers of the BBC's Dragons' Den were recently treated to a live performance by a mariachi band.

Monterrey-born businesswoman Marcela Flores Newburn had put together the musical ensemble in order to pitch her Mexican food range to the five business giants.
