Mexico statistics show death every 30 minutes

January 13, 2012

The war on drugs in Mexico took on average one life every half an hour last year, it has been revealed.

Statistics released by the attorney general's office earlier this week stated that the violence waged by the country's notorious drug cartels caused around 50,000 deaths in total, but more recent analysis of the figures has shown that more and more people are being killed each day, especially along the border with the US where gangs fight for trafficking control.

According to the figures, from September 2010 to the same time in 2011, the number of drug war-related deaths rose 11 per cent.

Furthermore, the information released by the Mexican government revealed that there were 12,903 killings related to drug cartel violence between January and September last year.

Chris Sabatini, policy director for the Americas Society, told the New York Daily News that the majority of troubles are unlikely to spill into the US.

A man was shot to death in the courtyard of a school in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez earlier this week, adding to the total number of killings for this year.
