Mexico ‘is not a drug-producing country’

July 1, 2011

The US has been criticised for failing to do enough to curb ongoing drug-related violence in Mexico.

Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico, insisted the country is not a drug-consuming or a drug-producing nation, MSNBC reports.

Speaking to News 5, he said Mexico is instead being used by cartels simply for transit purposes, so the supplies of narcotics can be used in the US.

This, he stated, means the Americans should step up their efforts to curb this illegal activity, possibly by looking at ways to reduce drug consumption among the US population.

In addition, Mr Fox suggested that making drugs legal in the US could reduce drug-related violence in central America.

"This is not Mexico's problem – this is a US problem," he added.

Mr Fox's comments came after a report from the US State Department, cited by CNN, criticised the length of the sentences being handed out to criminals involved in human trafficking, along with the level of funding for victim services.
