Mexican drug boss detained

June 23, 2011

Police in Mexico have been praised by the president of the country for capturing the head of a notorious drugs cartel.

Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargus, the leader of La Familia and also known as The Monkey, was arrested in Aguascalientes, which experts believe will prove to be a blow for organised crime in Mexico.

According to the BBC, president Felipe Calderon has welcomed the capture, with the government having placed a $2.5 million reward for anyone coming forward with information leading to the arrest.

The Mexican attorney general's office said that the criminal was "responsible for the transfer and sale of cocaine, marijuana, crystal methamphetamine in various states of Mexico and the US".

This comes after families of people killed in the ongoing drugs war in Mexico joined acclaimed poet Javier Sicilia on his 'peace caravan' tour, which travelled 2,500km to call for a stop to the drug-related violence.
