Mariachi music ‘may increase in popularity after UN approval’

December 14, 2011

Mariachi musicians from Mexico hope that UN recognition of the musical tradition will boost the popularity of their songs.

The educational and cultural agency at the UN last week added the form of music to its list of intangible cultural heritages along with Taekkyeon, a traditional Korean martial art, and French horseback riding, Reuters reports.

Trumpeter in one of the acclaimed Mariachi bands Domingo Ramirez said he hopes this recognition will encourage more people outside of Mexico to gain appreciation for the traditional music form.

He told the news agency: "Before it was a decent living and today we do it because it's our profession.

"But there are days when you don't make anything."

Traditionally, the zapateado is the dance technique associated with the son jalisciense and son jarocho. This consists of a distinct type of footwork originating in Spain.
