As we approach Easter added to my thoughts of how to celebrate the Christian Faith, with such young children, I decided to write a story.
With all the usual activities centred around creative arts, – decorating eggs, making bunny masks with paper plates, planting seeds, and so much more, it is a fun time for children. In my preschool, I have been pleased to see some real imaginative play with eggs and science experiments – age appropriate of course!
And the opportunity for so much learning. But there is more. always more!
We have Easter as a Christian celebration in the UK, celebrating the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ, so how do we explain that to preschool children? Clearly, we can’t!
But in the average preschool unless you are in a Sunday school is the name of Jesus even mentioned? Hum!
Well here goes, ‘once upon a time there lived a man who was very kind. He said that we should always be kind to one another, help each other and share. He told us that sometimes we have to do things which we can’t do or are very hard for us, but we must keep trying….’ And so, Storytime begins at a level to which they can connect. Young children love circle time, discussion, a show of hands, interaction and stories.
So, this is my Easter Story about the birth of Little Chick and hopefully the young children will remember that Easter is not just about chocolate eggs, but it is about a very ‘special person called Jesus who taught us to be kind and always keep trying when life is tough.
Little Chick finally made it!
Have fun

Little Chick’s First Stand
A short story for preschool children
At Rainbow Child Care, on Easter morning,
A tiny yellow chick was born.
With fluffy wings and wobbly feet,
He dreamed of standing tall and sweet.
He tried once… plop! down he went.
He tried twice… his knees were bent.
‘Oh dear, he peeped, ‘this standing’s tough!’
But brave little chicks are strong enough!
Anna smiled and softly said,
‘Try again, lift up your head.’
So wiggle-wobble, to and fro,
He pushed himself up, nice and slow.
He fell again in fluffy hay,
But didn’t let that spoil his day.
‘I’ll try again!’ he chirped out loud
And made Miss Anna very proud.
With one more push and one more peep,
He found his balance – not a peep!
He stood up tall, so brave and bright,
A fluffy ball of Easter light.
So, when things feel a little tough,
Remember – you are strong enough.
Just like that chick who wouldn’t stop,
Keep trying till you reach the top! 🐣🌈
