Learning about the environment ‘is important’

October 28, 2011

As well as literacy, children in schools should be taught the importance of looking after the environment, one expert has claimed.

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) suggested that youngsters need to be taught how to conserve energy and adopt eco-friendly practices in everyday life.

Andrew Leech, director at the NHIC, said: "It only needs to be a couple of hours a week, but it should instil into young people that they must save energy."

He added that children must be taught to turn off lights when they leave a room and not leave appliances on standby as this wastes energy and money.

Energy secretary Chris Huhne mentioned at a recent conference that he will put the spotlight on the economic benefits to Britain of investing in green energy and attack what he calls an unholy alliance of short-termists, armchair engineers, climate sceptics and vested interests who are selling the UK economy short.

The NHIC also suggested that the National Curriculum should be changed to include environmentally friendly lessons.
