Holidays

August 13, 2013

A few days in rural Spain and it has been fun. My favourite retreat, and although no holiday resort, there has been plenty to do for my 7 year old granddaughter. Having said that, I think she has spent enough time with me now and needs the company of other children once again. Well another 36 hours and back to the coast. Sun, sea and jellyfish no doubt! It will be a stark contrast from the constant barking of the farmer’s dogs, the mewing of the peacock and the early morning cockerel call.

As with all kids on holiday the routine has gone completely out of sorts and although most of the time I have entertained her – and enjoyed it – I have also left her to do her own ‘stuff ‘ which, has more than amused me. From discovering her with a well thought out list of words for which she wanted to know the translation, hence engrossed in a large Spanish dictionary.

To how many Jacqueline Wilson books can she read in one day? It’s been entertaining. I have to say half a page from alternating books would frazzle my brain but not a child’s apparently.

There have been plenty of hilarious moments as you will know if you read my previous couple of holiday blogs, but the highlight of today was when I asked her to stop splashing me in the pool because I don’t particularly like tons of water in my face. So now you know I meander in the pool and I’m not particularly into underwater swimming, diving etc. which posed the question;-

“Nanny, if I was drowning would you rescue me or would you not want water in your face?”

Hum! Seems like I’m into diving after all.Awh! Bless… But it’s true. Why do lots of us girls swim with our heads upright trying desperately not to get water in our face?

Moving on, she thought it was hilarious when I asked her to get out of the pool for a while until I had caught the grass snake which seemed to be hovering on the bottom. Although not a common occurrence we have been known to have them on the land and in the pool, bearing in mind we are now in rural Spain.

Whilst I spent a few minutes wondering which the head was and which the tail, as all I could make out was its patterned body lying on the bottom of the pool, and I wasn’t happy I might add. She began to giggle, passed me her pink fishing net and exclaimed.

“Nanny it’s not a snake it’s the ribbon I had in my hair yesterday.”

What a relief!

So what’s on the agenda for tomorrow? More swimming without a doubt and we still haven’t finished our jewellery with our new exotic bead making kit, not to mention all the colouring and sticker fun still waiting for us. Oh my gosh! This holiday stuff is hard work.

One thing for sure, her mum should be pleased. That is one chunk of the school holidays sorted and she doesn’t have to worry about her child care.
