Head teacher hails children’s books

May 25, 2011

Schools looking to invest in new key stage 2 books for youngsters should be able to find material that suits all tastes.

According to Richard Wilkin, head teacher at St Bede's Inter-Church School in Cambridge, there are "well-written" books available that suit both girls and boys.

Speaking to the Cambridge News, he said this means there should be something of interest for all children, regardless of their reading ability.

Mr Wilkin called on parents to support teachers' efforts to get youngsters interested in picking up a book by setting a "positive example by reading for pleasure at home".

However, he acknowledged that boys are often more reluctant to read than girls.

Mr Wilkin suggested that enthusiasm for books among young people could be promoted if they are started off on material that reflects their interests.

"More literary works can be introduced subsequently," he commented.

This comes after Professor Colin Terrell told the Telegraph that getting boys to read the sports section in a tabloid could help them to get their reading skills up to a sufficient standard.
