Environmental stresses ‘could cause violent behaviour’

December 12, 2011

Children in Mexico are heavily influenced by environmental stresses that could cause them to be more prone to violent acts, according to a new study.

Researchers from the RAND Corporation's health division in Pittsburgh looked at Mexicans and Mexican-Americans as part of their social study and concluded that behavioural problems among youngsters have strong links to things that have happened around them during their lives, Reuters reports.

Author of the study Joshua Breslau, speaking of Mexican-American immigrant kids and the U.S.-born kids of immigrants, said: "It's not like this is a population with some uniquely high level of conduct disorder.

"Even in the highest level of conduct disorder [in the study], they're still pretty much at the same level as the rest of the US."

He added that of the 1,800 people looked at there was a clear pattern in many individual behaviours which could be traced back to each immigrant generation that would have been diagnosed with the disorder as youngsters.

According to patient.co.uk, some of the most common behavioural problems found in children include trouble at school, aggression and a lack of control of physical functions which could lead to violence.
