Endurance

June 23, 2014

Just watched Sky News and was thinking, how do some people cope with the difficulties that come upon them? I suppose in actual fact the answer to that is some don’t, but many do. Have you ever thought or said to a friend? ‘I don’t know how you cope ‘cos I couldn’t live your life.’

Well I’ve just listened to the interview with the distraught woman whose son, a British citizen has left the UK and gone to fight with the terrorist organisation, Isis in Iraq. Her plea for him to return home was emotional as one would expect. Not sure whether she just feared for her only son’s life as any mother would or whether she actually didn’t agree with the cause.

Then I thought of the mother of the murdered teenager in the UK this week. Which one? That’s becoming a regular occurrence. The figures would astound you if you were to check how many young people lose their lives per year through drink, drugs and violence. How do those mothers endure such pain?

What of the parents of the 200 Nigerian girls still missing I’m wondering how they too endure.

Sociologists say that people handle trauma in one of two ways. They either give up or develop the capacity to handle it. Quitting is always easier than enduring.

O.K. Kidnapping or the death of a loved one is traumatic but then there is the endurance we have to face when life just keeps kicking us in the butt. That relentless struggle, when we overcome one obstacle and another one hits us with a vengeance, bigger than the last.

The dictionary says;- endurance is the ability to keep doing something difficult, unpleasant or painful for a long time. Isn’t it interesting that some people sail through life without a hiccup. No health issues, no financial difficulties or relationship problems or am I just being naïve and these people don’t actually exist; they simply don’t talk about what giants they are facing? Seriously I do know some folk who have a very easy simple stress free life whilst others have constant crap thrown at them. I’m certainly in the second category but I endure. I suppose it’s coming up against those problems and trials that shape our character mentally and spiritually.

So endure. Push through you’ll be glad you did.

Have a great week, stay strong and face those giants giving credit to those whose trials are far worse than yours.
