Educational grants awarded to schools in Mexico

September 28, 2011

Schools on the border of Mexico have been awarded government grants to help fund scholarships for adult learners.

Three local educational institutions received $42,500 (£27,365) as part of the Institute of Mexican Nationals in the Exterior's Becas-IME scholarship programme, which will benefit students who are Mexican or Mexican-American, reports the El Paso Times.

According to two of the schools who received the grants, El Paso and Dona Ana community colleges, the money will be used to help mature students with costs of textbooks, learning materials and General Education Diploma testing expenses. The funding will also go towards teaching English as a foreign language.

Representatives for the scholarships predict that the combined funds of the initiative will benefit around 800 students in the region.

Estrella Escobar, assistant to the president at University of Texas El Paso, said. "Scholarships make all the difference in the world. Sometimes students need that little push."

Proof of Mexican citizenship is required to attend public schools in the region for free, but foreigners can attend public schools by paying tuition fees.
