Drug haul of 4,000 kilos seized in Mexico City

December 7, 2011

Mexican drug cartels lost nearly 4,000 kilos of marijuana after it was seized by officials in the northern state of Tamaulipas on Monday (December 5th).

The Defence Ministry announced yesterday that the seizure had been made in a further bid to reduce the crime of drug trafficking between the US and Mexico, which has led to the loss of nearly 50,000 lives due to drug-related violence, the Xinhua news agency reports.

Raids were part of the Northeast Operation, led by the ministry, which also gathered drugs from other areas between Thursday and Sunday.

According to reports, the army seized 1,060 doses of cocaine, 24 guns, 28,000 cartridges and a total of four tons of marijuana.

This latest raid comes after a significant find of an underground passageway linking the Mexican border city of Tijuana and San Diego in California. The 1,200 ft tunnel was located last month and police from the US found 17 tons of illegal substances which would have been transported across the border for sale in the US.
