Dolly Parton brings literacy scheme to Cardiff

November 30, 2011

A literacy scheme founded by country and western singer Dolly Parton has been launched in Cardiff.

Staff at Cadwyn Housing Association will run the Cardiff Imagination Library as the first of its kind in Wales, which allows children of all ages and abilities to gain access to a free book every month, Wales Online reports.

First seen in Tennessee, the initiative aims to get more children reading and improve the literacy skills of a generation.

The housing association first heard about the library when the Jolene singer appeared on BBC Radio 2 to talk about it.

With funds raised through a football tournament and sponsored bike ride, staff were able to implement the project successfully in the city.

The workers at the association suggested that Cadwyn’s Imagination Library is benefiting the children of its tenants, staff and board members.

Currently, the Imagination Library organisation is sending books to just under 700,000 children every month in the US, Canada and Britain.
