Creative Minds

June 16, 2017

Enjoying the peace and tranquility, not to mention the Spanish sunshine – plenty of Vitamin D – before I dash back to Yorkshire to catch up with family and business matters.

Yes, next week I have to check on the progress of the Chavos Musical. What a year!

Anyway, there is something so wonderful about waking to the sound of the mewing peacock, the bark of the farmer’s dog, the whooshing and gurgling of running water and then spy through the window the glistening feathers of the tiny brightly coloured finches as they perch on the terrace waiting for breakfast crumbs. Wow! I said all that in one sentence!

It sounds delightful doesn’t it? I so much prefer to wake in a rural setting and enjoy God’s creation than to wake on the coast filled with tourists. Now there’s nothing wrong with tourists, I’ve been one myself on plenty of occasions, but beach and the masses never did anything for me. My Spanish home used to be on the coast and one of the best decisions I ever made in life was to move inland.
I suppose that’s because I like to write and don’t want too many distractions. That said, people watching is so important to writers. Where do our colourful characters come from? Indeed, my inspiration for Chavos came from the vibrant and busy Mexico City. All things in moderation I suppose, and the more life experiences one has the more ideas we have stored away to develop our stories.

That’s the word of the day, stories!

Having visited many schools over the years it has been interesting to see what ideas the kids come up with when challenged to write. In my experience getting started is always hard, and that is why I suggested lead paragraphs for the #inspiringcostakids competition. So looking forward to reading those stories and see what young creative minds produce.

The BBC Radio 2 Writing Competition in the UK turned out to be a great success and has been going for several years now. Let’s hope our campaign on the Spanish Costa does as well. New adventures always take time. Can I call it a new adventure? Well, it is on my part. I suggested the competition and the next day it was happening. Hum! Be careful what you speak out.

Only joking!
