Calderon: Govt’s drug policy has yielded successes

July 1, 2011

Mexico's president has insisted that the government has achieved some crucial successes in its efforts to tackle drug-related violence across the country.

Speaking to Milenio Television, Felipe Calderon revealed that 21 of Mexico's main drug lords have already been taken into custody, the Associated Press reports.

Furthermore, he said many people are able to enjoy peace and quiet at home because of various successful operations.

However, Mr Calderon acknowledged that public sentiment is not entirely behind him – a fact highlighted recently when poet Javier Sicilia organised a peace caravan to protest at government policy.

"If we explained ourselves better, I think people would not just be more disposed to support [our policy], but we could move forward more rapidly," he commented.

Mr Calderon added that the public attitude towards the government's approach is down to a "misunderstanding".

This comes shortly after he revealed the ongoing drug war in Mexico has left him feeling "deeply aggrieved".
