Calderon ‘deeply aggrieved by Mexico’s pain’

June 27, 2011

Mexico's president has revealed that the country's ongoing drug war has left him feeling "deeply aggrieved".

Felipe Calderon recently met with families who have been affected by drug-related violence in recent years and told them he too has been hurt by "Mexico's pain".

He admitted that the government had made some mistakes in trying to deal with the problem, such as not sending in the army much sooner than it did.

However, Mr Calderon backed the policy of using the military to try to quell violence among drug cartels, despite this being one of the reasons behind a major protest staged across the country recently.

"I agree we must ask forgiveness for the people who died at the hands of these criminals, for not having acted against these criminals," he commented.

This comes after US secretary of state Hillary Clinton pledged to offer more support to countries in Central America as part of an effort to curb ongoing violence in the region.
