Budget cuts ‘could harm schools’ literacy schemes’

December 30, 2011

School pupils across the UK could be left without careers advice services and literacy schemes as research suggested that budget cuts will hit young students hardest.

The Guardian has found that the education secretary's plans to put education at the forefront  will also result in vital parts of future planning and learning initiatives being lost.

Michael Gove announced last year that the government was "protecting the frontline" and that £1 billion would be cut from the budgets of schools and colleges  by trimming away back-of-office schemes, such as those involved in careers advice and literacy.

The Guardian also found that a lesser budget is already reducing the range of education on offer to those studying in England.

Furthermore, even schools in deprived areas are being forced to make cuts to services, despite receiving the pupil premium.

The funding initiative was set up by the coalition as part of its educational reforms, whereby schools receive extra funding in order to address inequalities with free school meals.
