Brit speaks of Mexican ordeal

June 17, 2011

A 44-year-old man from Burton-on-Trent has spoken in detail about how he escaped from a Mexican gang who kidnapped him while he was on a biking holiday in the country.

Father-of-two Jim Wolfe was on a pan-American expedition near Acapulco when he was bundled in the back of a truck and held at gunpoint, the Daily Mail reports.

According to Mr Wolfe, the gang were dressed as police officers and had signalled him to pull over.

"They were armed with grenades, pistols, machetes – you name it, they had it. My heart sank as I realised they weren't real police officers," he explained.

However, after discovering his passport and realising he was not American, the criminals began to argue over whether to kill him or not, before allowing the Brit to make a run for it, later being picked up by a civilian truck driver and taken to safety.

The Latin American Herald Tribune reported that at least 13 people were killed in drug-related violence in Monterrey this week, with seven bodies being dumped across the metropolitan area.
