Boris Johnson hopes to encourage literacy on London Underground

December 13, 2011

A new literacy initiative for children and adults may be encouraged on the London Underground, according to latest announcements from mayor Boris Johnson.

Following an idea proposal from Chris Gilson, a political researcher at the London School of Economics, Mr Johnson plans to implement a book swap scheme on the transport network that will allow people to swap their used books for others at train and tube stations.

The mayor of London said that he is "thrilled" to be putting this plan into action and aims to have it up and running before the 2012 Olympic Games next summer.

He added: "I think it's a very good idea and would say something powerful about the kind of city we are and our commitment to literacy."

This will be the next campaign to improve literacy in the capital after the London Evening Standard's Get London Reading scheme received substantial support from officials and the public.
