Student takes part in Mexican Embassy protest

May 23, 2011

A student who was born in Mexico but lives in the UK has taken part in protests against her homeland's government.

Cinthia Mena-Duran, who studies at the University of York, called on policymakers to change their strategy as they attempt to deal with continuing violence across the country.

Speaking to the Yorker, she said: "We don't want more dead people – change the legislation, criminals should go to jail, clean the police."

Ms Mena-Duran stated that she believes the government will have heard the calls of demonstrators at the recent protests, which were staged at the Mexican Embassy in London.

She noted that while she lives in the UK, her friends and relatives remain in Mexico.

The student added that it was important to take part in the protest because it allows people to express their unhappiness to the Mexican government.

This echoes recent comments by poet Javier Sicilia, who was recently quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying the Mexican population is fed up, as the fact killers still roam free indicates the government's tactics have not worked.
