World Book Day

March 7, 2018

Well for many World Book Day, celebrated in the UK on 1st  March, didn’t happen last week as planned. Yes the snow played havoc with everything including business interruption and school closures.

So many disappointed faces as the costumes didn’t come out of the wardrobe. But it wasn’t so bad after all as attire was replaced with snow boots, sledges and snow days.

Yes, even my business closed for one day, but staying home and being cosy was easy to cope with, when I think of those poor folk in different parts of the UK who were stranded on motorways for hours.

Yes there’s always someone worse off.

Anyway, now on catch up, as so many are adorning their outfits this week, World Book Day seems to have become a full week of celebration. What amazing outfits I’ve seen so far at my own kindergarten, and I’m looking forward to going into the local primary school tomorrow to do story time and join in their celebrations.

If I can post a photo or two I will, but it’s such a pain these days with all the permission slips we have to have signed. Child protection of course!

Ok, so all those children who didn’t have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character, here’s another chance.

Meanwhile, some places haven’t even thought about celebrating yet.

Did you know that World Book Day, also known as Copyright Day was first recognised by UNESCO in 1995, and that a particular date of 23rd April was chosen in recognition of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth and death of several other prominent authors?

Of course in Spain much of the celebration was centred around Miguel de Cervantes and they began to celebrate from as early as 1923. The 23rd April, being his death.

Whatever the reason to celebrate we should indeed recognise the importance of reading and some of the great prolific writers that have gone before.

One of my favourite has to be the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis.

So chat soon and get reading.
