Semana Santa

April 21, 2011

As we hurtle towards Easter weekend, children everywhere get excited about the thought of Easter Eggs and chocolate. I have no problem with that being a chocoholic myself.

But what is Easter really all about? Actually it is the most important holiday in the Christian/Catholic community. Called Semana Santa in Mexico and Spanish speaking countries, it is the time to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Mexico, 90% of the population are Catholics.

Processions and passion plays take place throughout the country, beginning on Maundy Thursday-when Jesus had the last supper with His apostles-prior to His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Good Friday recalls the crucifixion of Christ, when solemn processions with statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary are carried through the streets.

Unlike in the UK on Easter Sunday, you will not find an abundance of Easter Eggs and chocolate. People celebrate quietly and thoughtfully in their homes. Easter apparently, is named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, and the egg symbolises new birth for Christians and non Christians alike.

Whatever your belief system, Spring should be a thoughtful time. A time of new birth and new beginnings. I believe a time to reflect on the teaching of Christ.

Happy Easter and enjoy your chocolate.
