School reviews

August 16, 2012

Here are a few of the reviews from the children Anna visited at St Alban’s C of E Primary School, London, in association with the Get London Reading Campaign.

Nia rated the book 4.5 out of 5 and said ‘her favourite part of the book was the chapter: The house at 247 because it had a mixture of suspense and emotion and was exciting.’ She also said ‘it helps you imagine what it’s like for children living on the streets in Mexico.’

Radeyah also rated the book 4.5 out of 5 and would recommend it to children over 10. Her favourite character was Dolita, who is the main character, because ‘she always looks at the positives and never gives up.’

Samira rated the book 4 out of 5 and would recommend the book because ‘even though all the characters are made up, Anna actually went to Mexico and saw how it is like to live on the streets and that’s why the setting and atmosphere seemed real and special, not like many books.’

Mia rated the book 4 out of 5. Her favourite character was Raggy Man, Dolita’s faithful dog and companion because ‘he is a special dog, he is a hero and brave because he saved Dolita from the vicious snake.’ Her favourite bit of the book was the last chapter because she said ‘it leaves you on an exciting, good cliff hanger. I was on the edge of my seat. After reading it a happy feeling jumped inside of me because I was dying to find out what happens next.’

Hazzel gave the book 8 out of 10 and said ‘the best part of the book is chapter 13, baby in the basura. The chapter is about Dolita finding an abandoned baby on a pile of garbage. Will the baby survive?’

Kaiyum gave the book 4 out of 5. ‘I would recommend this book because this book is helping me found out more about children in need and on the streets.’

Khadija rated the book 9 out of 10 and said ‘I think that whoever reads this book would love it and would definitely enjoy it.’ Her favourite character is Rocio because ‘she is the motherly one and is kind and caring.’ She thought that the illustrations ‘were great because the pictures were bold and stand out and had lots of detail.’
