Mexico Blog

June 30, 2012

So I’m finally in recovery and relaxing after an exhausting day on the streets. Actually it started out quite bewildering with me feeling like a complete idiot being the focus of much of the filming. Suddenly life takes on a different perspective when you know a camera is following you around. By the time we wrapped up, some 9 hours later, I was beginning to feel like a pro and thought it might be quite fun to do this again next week. Not so! But I’m thinking in my next life I want Amanpour’s job.

So now I would love to chill with a delicious glass of full-bodied red wine, perhaps even tequila, but as I mentioned in my previous blog, Mexico is dry until after the elections. As I scan the room where I’ve happily learnt to chill after a hard day’s work, the bar which was once attractively decorated with bottles of tempting shots for Happy Hour, is decidedly empty.

La LEY SECA  translated, the dry law…trending on twitter of course all weekend. Unless you are drinking at home or attending private house parties it’s a dry weekend. You quite simply can’t buy alcohol anywhere. I think that’s an interesting concept and it might be a good option for the UK from time to time!

Meanwhile, back to the streets.

Yesterday the rain held off and we were still filming in the park…yes there are parks in Mexico City…until 8.30 pm. Actually Mexico City is beautiful in parts as I mentioned before, just in case you didn’t read my previous blogs. Such a comparison to today, as the sky thundered and the rain poured from 3pm onwards. It sure was scary and at one point the thunder sounded like an angry alien coming into the room to devour me. Seriously, I didn’t like it!

So was the day successful? Well I’m waiting for the feedback from the crew when they have had time to re-play all. But I sure hope so. Our paths crossed with other film crews, far more exciting than ours I might add, obviously high budget commercials. Not surprisingly the police halted us on more than one occasion to check our intentions were honourable. It’s a pain that we wasted about 3 hours sitting in traffic-jams trying to get from one location to another, but that’s Mexico City.

Interestingly the day before filming, I conducted one of my meetings in my colleague’s car, as fortunately she had a driver – a chauffeur if you’re posh –as we took so long getting to our destination, it was time to turn around and come back when we arrived. Ha! Ha! You laugh?

I’m having fun in Mexico City…

Don’t get the wrong impression I love it. Well sometimes. What do they say?

¡Conocerlo es amarlo!

I expect you want to know exactly what we were filming. Well you’ll find out when it’s aired. Will keep you posted.

Habla pronto
