Memory a key part of child literacy, notes expert

July 22, 2011

A bad memory can hinder people at all stages of life, according to one leading expert, but particularly during the early parts of their learning.

Teresa Bliss, child and educational psychologist, explained that young people must have the ability to listen to what a teacher is saying and retrieve the information later if they are able to learn effectively.

She pointed out that children with poor memories often struggle at school, adding: "Memory is a key aspect of cognitive functioning. People often admit to having a poor memory, but a poor memory intrudes into all aspects of learning."

In her opinion, people must use their memories as much as possible in order to keep them in working order, in the same way that physical fitness is achieved by using muscles regularly.

Ms Bliss's comments follow research published by academic journal Science, which indicated that people's ability to recall information is hindered if they believe they will have future access to the data, such as from an online source.
